Purvītis winter night set

To celebrate Vilhelms Purvitis 150 anniversary and to give something to our Latvia for birthday we have put together a special palette – 15 colors of Purvitis Winter Night. If we lived in the same time, now we would take the courage to send this palette to him. Maybe that’s the reason why we didn’t do it earlier. We had to gain confidence.

Vilhelms Purvītis was one of the greatest landscape artists of Latvia, famous for his winter and snow paintings.

We personally think that it takes time to understand his art. It takes time to immerse in the muted beauty of our incredibly rich nature. We don’t have mountains or impressive waterfalls. We don’t have impressive ocean or true winter lights. But we have the sea that is covered with ice in winter and glows in gold in autumn. We have real four seasons, delicate meadows, rich forests, small rivers and lakes, marshes, and the biggest sky possible. Purvitis saw this beauty and captured it so gracefully. He obviously loved our landscape so much that it has become part of our identity. And it includes winter nights. Impossibly dark when we don’t have snow and amazingly bright when we have it. Purvitis has got endless prizes for his snow paintings. Like Peter Hags Smilla’s sense of snow is an oda to the written word about winter, we would like to say that Purvitis is one of the greatest artists of snow.

The set of 15 in a tin with a sliding lid includes:

  • Zinc white – for lightening up our saturated colors
  • Gold ochre – for sunny winter days
  • Gerda’s pink – for glowing snow in the sunshine
  • Rūtas dream – granulating grey that splits into three colors just like light splits in snow
  • Bilberry, Blueberry and Bark from our DeepForest sets – for moody sky and trees
  • Rose Ashes – granulating purple for sunsets and snow reflections in the evening
  • Forget me not from our Baltic meadow set – subtle granulating in pink and light blue for snow shadows
  • Deep blue – for winter sky on sunny days
  • Asphalt – granulating grey for snow shimmer
  • Juniper – for evergreens
  • Night raspberry – dark granulating violet perfect for shadows and night sky
  • Jay blue – granulating dark blue for contrast and night sky
  • Mars black – to add contrast and moody drama when the mood asks for it.

We think this can be a beautiful beginning of your first DeepDeepLight collection.

All our watercolors are artist-grade with a minimum lightfastness rating 6 out of 8 (scaled to last 50+ years without significant change). They mix nicely with other natural and human-made pigments. For best performance add a few drops of water some minutes before starting to paint. It will reactivate the pigment and will be more fluid.

All our watercolors are handmade from pigment or pigment mixes, binders, and essential oils as conservative. Binder is made by ourselves from gum arabic, natural honey, and water. Our watercolors have a flowery scent, with lemongrass as the top note and sandalwood in the base note.
