We are Umbra family. Natural earth pigments – Light Umbra, Burnt Umbra and Dark Umbra.
Our family name comes from Italy, from Umbria region where our great grandfather and great grandmother were found in 15th century. Some family myth tells that in reality our name comes from Latin “umbra” meaning shadow. And artists do use us for shadows. Medieval artists didn’t love us because we were just earth. But then came Carravaggio and Bosch and Vermeer and we got our fame and titles. But then impressionists arrived with a revolution in art and replaced us, natural beauty with mixes from synthetic yellow, green and red.
We are here to get you back to nature, as natural and unspoiled as possible.
This is a set of three umbras – light, dark and burnt (single pigments, Pigment number PBr7) in a tin for 3 with a sliding lid.
Mixes nicely with other natural and human-made pigments. For best performance add a few drops of water some minutes before starting to work with them. It will reactivate the pigment and will be more fluid.
All our watercolors are handmade from pigment or pigment mixes, binders, and essential oils as conservative. Binder is made by ourselves from gum arabic, natural honey, and water. Our watercolors have a flowery scent, with lemongrass as the top note and sandalwood in the base note.
