The Shibui Palette is a collaboration between Deep Deep Light and an amazing artist, our ambassador Kateri Ewing of Art & Spirit studio. We call Kateri our watercolor whisperer – she paints, feels, and does magic with this medium. As well as words, emotions, and bringing humanity to the surface. Here is what Kateri says about Shibui Palette:
“For many years I have studied the Japanese aesthetic of Shibui and it has become the underlying philosophy of my own personal work and my own understanding of beauty as seen through the lens of everyday life. Here are some of my thoughts about Shibui as it applies to the way I create:
Suggestion over statement. The more subtle the suggestion, the more tasteful the work of art.
As in nature, there is nothing overly ornate about shibui. Every element counts, quietly creating the structure of the whole. A whisper. An experience. There is a serene darkness, a restfulness and ease at its core.
Quiet. Sober. Tasteful. Refined and Rough simultaneously. Modest.
Simplicity. Tranquility. Everydayness. Spare elegance, never forced.
Imperfect.
Nuanced hues that can be further quieted with various shades of grey. Sometimes a hint of sparkle. Just a hint. Incandescent within dusky.
Not affected by trends, there is a simple quality that stands the test of time. The more you use it or experience it, the more it reveals.
Two new colors were created for this subtle selection of 15 handmade watercolours that embody my sense of Shibui:
Midori, a mystic’s cool green, with hints of warmer hues and tiny particles of darkness that flow within its washes.
Darkling, a deep Cassel earth with subtle hints of shimmering bronze, a spark of light within the dark.
These colors are meant to be lingered over in quiet moments of everyday expressive play. Soothing, subtle harmony no matter how you combine them.”

Our watercolors have a flowery scent, with lemongrass as the top note and sandalwood as the base note
