Description

Gold Ochre. Pigment number PY43, single pigment half-pan watercolour. Fits in all palettes designed for half-pans.

I was here before you and will stay beyond. I am one of the oldest pigments. Used in healing and protecting, one of the first in cave paintings. I am in your churches, temples, palaces and contemporary museums. Just as the Sun. I am the Sun. Nordic Sun.

Gold ochre is a natural clay earth pigment which is a mixture of ferric oxide and varying amounts of clay and sand. The major ingredient of all the ochres is iron(III) oxide-hydroxide, known as limonite, which gives them a yellow colour. Yellow ochre, FeO(OH)·nH2O, is a hydrated iron hydroxide (limonite) also called gold ochre.

Iron oxide is one of the most common minerals found on earth, and there is much evidence that yellow and red ochre pigment was used in prehistoric and ancient times by many different civilizations on different continents. Pieces of ochre engraved with abstract designs have been found at the site of the Blombos Cave in South Africa, dated to around 75,000 years ago. Ochre has uses other than as paint: “tribal peoples alive today . . . use either as a way to treat animal skins or else as an insect repellent, to staunch bleeding, or as protection from the sun. Ochre may have been the first medicament.” (Watson P., 2006)

As a clay, gold ochre is very pleasant to work with. Semi-transparent, non-granulating warm yellow. Mixes nicely with other natural and human pigments. For best performance add a few drops of water some minutes before starting to work with it. It will reactivate the pigment and will be more fluid.

All our watercolours are handmade from pigment or pigment mixes, binder and essential oils as conservative. Binder is made by ourselves from gum arabic, natural honey or vegetable glycerin in vegan version and water. Our watercolours have a flowery scent, with lemongrass as top note and sandalwood in the base note.
