Watercolor Gourmand set

These six colors are for all watercolor gourmands—the ones who love exquisite natural pigments, who enjoy slowly noticing tiny differences, and who feel the soul of pigments. For those who immerse themselves in the story and geography of pigments, and who create new emotions through their art.

Our indigos are natural pigments—the only ones in our collection that are plant-based. We have three different indigos: grown in India, Central America, and France. The Central American indigo is the earthiest, the French one is the brightest, and the Indian indigo sits beautifully in between. These natural plant pigments are the most alive of all our paints. We feel it when mulling and curing them—they respond to weather changes, to the atmosphere, to water, and to everything around. We believe they listen to music and dance with it. And we are sure they will feel you—and take an active part in the art you create.

Our Tuffs are natural stone pigments. They come from Armenia and vary in color. Volcanic Ashes is the one we’ve had since the very beginning of DeepDeepLight. Now we’ve added two new pigments: Crimson, the warmest of them all, and Violet Grey, a muted, cooler version of Tuff. Each of them is lava, turned into volcanic ash, then returned to earth, transformed into stone, and finally made into pigment. The journey of these million-year-old particles is mystical and sacred. We love adding a bit of Tuff to many of our mixes—and also when painting. This pigment grounds everything and ties us to the infinity of time.

Please note that all these pigments require patience. Tuffs, being stone pigments, should be awakened slowly—at least 10 minutes before painting—to enjoy their soft company. And indigos need special care after painting—they should be completely dried to keep them in good shape. Indigo pigments are uneven in their consistency, which gives them a textured look and feel. Every harvest is different. We find this fascinating—it adds that special gourmand feel. Just like good coffee, tea, or wine, they have unique nuances that make the color experience truly special.

These pigments mix beautifully with both natural and human-made colors. For best performance, add a few drops of water a few minutes before you begin. This will reactivate the pigment and make it more fluid.

All our watercolors are handmade from pure pigments or pigment mixes, binders, and essential oils as a preservative. Our binder is made in-house from gum arabic, natural honey, and water. The result is a watercolor with a delicate, flowery scent—lemongrass as the top note, and sandalwood at the base.
