Tuff. Pigment number unknown, single pigment half-pan watercolour. Fits in all palettes designed for half-pans.

I am volcanic ash tuff. Patience is my second name. Patiently waiting for the eruption. Thrown up high in the air, sometimes covering the sky, becoming pink clouds in the sunset. Then coming down to earth and turning back to stone. Then after some thousand years turned into pigment and then in watercolour. Now patiently waiting for my turn to become a piece of art.

Tuff (from the Italian tufo), also known as volcanic tuff, is a type of rock made of volcanic ash ejected from a vent during a volcanic eruption. Following ejection and deposition, the ash is compacted into solid rock.

Tuff is one of the most surprising pigments we have worked with. It is semi-opaque, slightly granulating dark mauve. It is a perfect companion in mixes giving softly muted old pink accents. Mixes nicely with other natural and human pigments. For best performance add a few drops of water some minutes before starting to work with it. It will reactivate the pigment and will be more fluid.

All our watercolours are handmade from pigment or pigment mixes, binder and essential oils as conservative. Binder is made by ourselves from gum arabic, natural honey and water. Our watercolours have a flowery scent, with lemongrass as top note and sandalwood in the base note.
