I am the pigment of mystery. For thousands of years, people couldn’t find a formula to replicate pigments used by the Mayan civilization. Then around the year 2000 scientists finally found that Mayans used white clay that can be found just in their neighborhood. They mixed it with dyes derived from plants and heated. Then ground and here we go – Mayan secret appears to be one of the first pigments produced by humans. But the mystery isn’t over. Scientists found this formula, together with businessmen started production and… disappeared. This is a replica of the replicated production process. But still, I am Mayan red. Contemporary Mayan red.

Composed of a natural earth clay base with botanical, organic dyes affixed to it.

Bright almost transparent magenta type red. As it is a clay-based pigment, the feeling when painting is very fluid and smooth. Since this is a contemporary pigment, it is predictable and easy to work with. Mixes nicely with other natural and human-made pigments. For best performance add a few drops of water some minutes before starting to work with it. It will reactivate the pigment and will be more fluid.

All our watercolors are handmade from pigment or pigment mixes, binders, and essential oils as conservative. Binder is made by ourselves from gum arabic, natural honey or vegan vegetable glycerin, and water. Our watercolors have a flowery scent, with lemongrass as top note and sandalwood in the base note.
